I did the math also. Actually I did it for 2 reasons. One, because once you said not to my brain immediately decided not to listen. And, two, I am the daughter of a banker and wife to a CPA. So I guess that makes me a number lover.

I am a huge saver and big time believer of teaching my children the value of a dollar.

My late mother purchased savings bonds for my kids the year they were born. My son finally got his cashed --it was worth $135. He's decided to buy another bond with some of the money he got from her.
I save money, and I also pay off my debts as quickly as possible. It hasn't always been easy, but we had a few bad business years and I learned that debt is a noose.

I thank that WWII hero for his service. A friend who was a WWII veteran got killed in a car accident a little over a year ago. He was the sweetest man, a widower whose only daughter had died. I posted about him at the time.

I remember saving for bonds with stamps; they were sold through a savings program at school. I also remember having a passbook savings account, also offered by a bank through school. Seems those traditions lasted at least through the late 1960s.
