Fourth of July!

My favorite holiday. It all goes back to being a little girl and living right on the parade route. I'd take my little chair outside early in the morning so I'd be right on the curb because people would be four or five deep to see. I was so lucky to live where I did. The parade started at ten and I'd be outside by eight! Once in a while I'd run back inside to get something but my chair would be holding my place. No one ever moved it.

There were big trees on the street so it was shady on those hot July days of my youth. The baton twirlers were my favorite. The bands playing patriotic marches were my favorite. The floats with the pretty girls in gowns were my favorite. The convertibles with dignitaries were my favorite. The funny costumes were my favorite.

I'd run inside and get (half) a purple popsicle to hold me. You only got half at a time, remember those?

At noon we'd all walk up to the school yard where there were hotdogs for sale, cokes so cold there were ice crystals in the bottles, remember those little bottles in the coolers? And cotton candy, I liked the pink, not the blue. There were games with prizes and all kinds of fun.

At dusk we'd all go to the water's edge and put out our blankets and wait for the fireworks. The mosquitos would have a field day with us. Remember that first "swoosh" as the fireworks started? The exicitement? The smell? I remember it like it was yesterday. We were sitting on a woolen army blanket. It was itchy. I used it to make tents on the side of the house too. It was the "go to" blanket I guess. There were holes in the corners where I nailed it down.

I loved being a little girl. And I loved the fourth of July. I am an American and I am proud to be one. Very proud.

Have a lovely day, I know I will. Chuck is coming over! The end.

What wonderful memories Miss Bee...

I loved being a little girl too, but mainly now, I love building lasting memories that I hope one day my girls will look back and reflect on like you did.

Raise your flag high today and give Sarge a big fat thank you hug and kiss from the house of five. It is people like him who helped make this the land of the free and the home of the brave.

What a wonderful trip down Memory Lane! I can relate to so much of your post. We're the same age and I remember all of those things, too!
It was a slower time, a gentler time that our grandchildren will never understand, so it's up to us to give them things to remember.
I'm so glad that Chuck will be sharing the day with you...
~~~Blessings~~~
Wonderful memories. The double popsicles are a memory of mine from going to the beach when we lived in CT. An orange one and a pinwheel with the little sugar bead candies.
July 4th was spent at the country club. All of us huddled on the 9th green on blankets with red, white and blue bomb pops. I'd plug my ears (I don't like the booms) while watching the static displays and the fireworks.
I miss those Popsicles. A lot. Banana was my favorite. I remember nailing down the blanket. I would cringe if someone nailed holes in one of my blankets.
Happy Fourth of July!
I love reading your childhood memories.
I can remember going to see fireworks and sitting in the car with my parents with my pajamas on when I was really little.
Our town didn't have a parade on the Fourth of July. Sounds like yours was lots of fun.
Thanks for sharing your memories of this special day, Bee.
Glad Chuck is going to be with you today.
I'm glad I reminded you about Erma. ;-)
What a delightful walk down memory lane! I loved the 4th also... parade, carnival, fireworks. It was marvelous. My dad was very strict and we didn't get to do much - sometimes the parade. I guess he didn't seen any purpose in what we thought as fun things. As an adult, I got to experience my childhood July 4th dream-day many times... and I took my kids with me :o)
Oh how I'd hate it when the popsicle wouldn't break evenly. I'd always get stuck with the bad one since I'm the youngest. : (
Happy 4th!
